History of Inmotion Dance West

It was the summer of 1996 and the Fringe Festival for Independent Dance Artists (fFIDA) was calling for emerging dance choreographers to submit choreographies for the Dance Fringe. Upon graduating from Ryerson Theatre School, Lisa and Christine Brkich and four other dance graduates came together to perform in Lisa and Christine’s modern dance choreography of “All’s Fair In Love And...”

saywhatchawant-200x200This twenty minute work was to be in response to the Balkan War, and a view of female struggle during that time. As though the story had been waiting for years to be told, it came from us very rapidly, and touched the lives of all those who saw it, and those who performed it. That summer, upon completing the performances at fFIDA, a journey had begun. fFIDA had brought to life both the beginning of InMotion Dance Company, and the signature work that was to be performed not only for Toronto audiences, but also for the people of the Adriatic for which it was intended during the InMotion Dance Company 1999 Adriatic Coastal Tour.

During that time, InMotion Dance Company continued to create a multitude of modern dance works, some humorous, some dramatic, some for children, some for adults, yet all with one goal in mind.... tell the story for the common audience member who wants to be entertained, enlightened, lifted, and moved... which has remained our primary goal to this very day. Everyone loves a good story when it is told properly, when it is given a voice, and meant to take flight.

In 2000, the opportunity presented itself for Christine and Lisa Brkich to open InMotion Dance School. As dancers, choreographers, and dance teachers, this opportunity seemed too good to pass up. It meant the chance to educate young dancers with a multiple of dance disciplines to choose from, to open them to a new artistic world, to offer our highest quality of dance instruction, but it also meant to teach the “InMotion” way. “Tell a good story through your God given gift of dance and people will want to listen. Show the audience a human side of you that they never knew existed, and they will want more, but show the audience a human side of themselves that they never knew existed, and they will never be the same....”

Since then, the school continues to grow in numbers, always re-iterating this artistic goal to the students. InMotion Dance School provides instruction in the dance disciplines of Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, and Acro. It is an environment where one can grow as a dancer, but more importantly, as a human being. It is a safe place offun, quality instruction, and family values. It is where a young dancer can come to discover, and in searching, can find a new found friend in themselves and in those around them.
